But in the context of the first episode of Sherlock, I don't feel like it was reasonable for the assumption to be voiced by like, four different people in the course of one night, especially not when Watson and Sherlock had barely been acquainted for more than a day. To me, it felt like a failed attempt at creating a running gag, and was repeated to the point where it started to confuse my perception of the plot. I know that part of the point of the gay thing was to illustrate how Watson and Holmes possess an instant sort of synergy and bond with each other, but it was also a bit much at once.
I don't think I'd forgive it even if they end up as a canon thing. Not like I expect the gay angle to go canon, especially since homosexuality seems to have been somewhat villainized as of the third episode.
