Yuletide reveals are up!  That means I can share with you guys the fic I wrote for my dear recipient strixus.  This facet of the request was all I needed to know EXACTLY what I had to do, because I have wondered exactly those same points myself.

In particular, I loved what was done with Tron himself: transformed from hero worshiped by the young Sam into the faceless, growling villain of Sam’s nightmares, and then granted redemption in the last minutes of the film, yet possibly dieing in the end. I’d also deeply like some input from Alan on the issue with Tron, particularly if you see fit to have Tron survive his fall into the Sea of Simulation.

To put it more simply, really, I’m looking for something that plays with the transformation of Tron into Rinzler, and then Rinzler into Tron, and I’m totally open to the idea that Rinzler/Tron does die at the end of TRON: Legacy.

PUT IT ON A SILVER PLATTER FOR ME TOO, WHILE YOU ARE AT IT.  This prompt was PERFECT and an absolute thrill to write.

Lots of props to [personal profile] ambientfiligree  and [personal profile] tatterpixie , who beta'd the story for me.  Some of the comments mention the use of the computer language effectively, and it was K and Pixie who gave me a lot of help in making sure that language and that tone was consistent <3 <3 <3  Then also [personal profile] prodigy  and [personal profile] mindsplinters  and [personal profile] kol , who were all my comrades in Yuletide and each wrote excellent little (or large) fics, and were a major source of guidance and support to me in my first year of Yuletide ;_; <3  I had a lot of fun this year and expect to do it again next!

I LOVE TRON.  I was actually exposed to it first through Kingdom Hearts 2, of all places, since they had a Space Paranoids level and Tron becomes your friiiiiend and it's on the freaking Winnie the Pooh level of adorableness.  Then I went back to watch the 1980's movie and LOVED IT EVEN HARDER for its gritty, gladiatorial story - I really think of the original Tron movie as Digital Spartacus.  I'm a gigantic Daft Punk dork, so finding out not only that there was a Tron sequel coming out, but that Daft Punk was going to be part of it too, sent me to cloud nine.  Then Tron Legacy itself is just a breathtaking movie - like the original, I think it gets better the more you rewatch it.

Originally, my favorite part of the story was Tron getting really frustrated at the chicken pox analogy that he couldn't remember.  But at the eleventh hour I decided that I really needed to pull the perspective back out and let Sam or Alan have a direct say in the matter.  I didn't want to put that in the story itself though - that's why I used the Notes for Alan's email, to frame the story with the real-world perspective.  And I really enjoyed writing Alan, much more than I expected.  If I was to write this story over again, I would make it so that Alan is present for more of the story - maybe the story would be about Alan and Lora finding Tron's data in Sam's chip, and trying to reconstruct what happened to Tron's glitched memory files.  But hey, there is no saying that I can't write a sequel story to that effect.

My first (and really only)  OH SHIT moment came a few days after I decided what the first line of the fic and the last line of the fic would be....then realized that both lines were in first person.  Oh shit, I was going to write a first-person perspective of Tron.  I usually don't write in first person, period, much less the first person perspective of a non-human.  But I think it worked out okay, and some of the emotion that is core to the piece would be lost if there was a detached narrator to go along with a program like Tron who is generally slow to reveal his own emotions.

My idea of Rinzler is simply that I don't believe in Rinzler as an independent entity, in the same way Tron or any of the other programs were created with identity.  I think Rinzler is just Tron, but without Tron's purpose and the single-minded dedication that makes Tron endearing and brave and even narrow-sighted.  But there is no Tron, to me, without that spark of devotion.  It was there, as you see in the end of the film with the self-sacrifice, but I believe CLU was able bury the heart of Tron while still using the function of Tron (Rinzler).  I believe the Guard Tron killed and absorbed might have been an instrument that ultimately helped CLU re-write Tron, and the absorbing of the Guard might have helped CLU keep control over Rinzler,

But mostly I included the Guard because I believed it was bullshit that so much stress goes into your disc containing your identity (the whole conflict of the first movie was about the MCP wrongly taking away the identities and functions of programs), but Tron did exactly that to the Guard with no repercussions.  So I really wanted the Guard stuck in Tron's soul, and being the aggravating force that eventually wakes Tron up to the fact that he's not really in control of what is going on (in the chicken pox analogy, the Guard is the chicken pox that wakes up the rest of Tron to the bigger 'disease' of CLU/Rinzler).  Plus, the Guard gets to be a voice for why the Basic Programs dislike the ISOs.

And plus Black Guards are cool  :D
