I wrote a fic. It is Kingdom/Tron AU, starring Peter as The User. Everything else will be a surprise.
If you don't know anything about Tron Legacy or what the world looks like, this is a decent start. I wrote the story nearly exclusively to the movie soundtrack, which you can browse here. I consider 'Fragile' to be the companion song to this story.
I actually started this fic nearly 11 months ago, on the night that Tron:Legacy released. We got back from the theater at 3 AM, and I busted out the bones of this story. It's taken me a long time to really flesh it out, mostly cause of massive distraction. But I'm really happy to have it done. I actually have thought about Tron AU a fair bit, and have a storyline for it mapped out in my head. But we'll see if I ever get to other stories of it XD
(This story is subtitled "How many bad computing puns can Sage make in one fic?")
“This isn’t how you spend all your time here, is it? Bossing people around and making everything you touch explode.”

Date: 2011-11-18 02:12 am (UTC)I'm actually really touched by the comment about "most natural and obvious thing in the world". I don't know if this is how other people make AUs, but I really make an effort to immerse myself in the logic and rules of the AU world I'm using.
Also, putting the characters first helps a lot. I know I try to use AUs to try to illustrate parts of the character that might be harder to bring out in regular canon. There was a bit of a bomb for Deon in one part of Des's dialogue, for one, but I really love this fic because it is a chance to see the 'hero' that is in Peter, even though his powers don't allow for it in regular canon. It's also really pleasing to see a character act that way that character should even if the rules and situation of their setting has changed drastically.
(FOR EXAMPLE, SOMEONE WROTE THE COOLEST OGLAF AU, WHICH WAS SO COOL BECAUSE THE CHARACTERS ALL ACTED EXACTLY AS THEY SHOULD.)
IN SHORT, YAY. I like to think of Api/Ari as a program that specializing in syncs and detecting turbulence in transmissions. I know Rae and Brian are also big players in this AU - though I might hold off on saying how, cause if I did write another fic it'd be about them. Also, I imagine Loni, Jane, Alex, and Val as the Sirens in this AU. Aged-up and hot, of course.

Also also, Grid!Walker's name needs to be w4x0r. 4 t3h lulz.
I hope you write up the Rae and Brian fic at some point!

Date: 2011-11-17 09:26 pm (UTC)I TOO CRAVE MORE. This looks like it is such a cool setting to play with, especially given the conflicts everyone's Grid counterparts have to deal with.
(Also eee Peter-byte made me giggle! :D)

Date: 2011-11-18 02:16 am (UTC)I have to agree with your sentiment about the Grid not meaning as much in the real world. It did in the first Tron movie, since that was the computer system for all of Encom, but in the second movie...it's all in an isolated computer system in a busted arcade. Not quite the gravity as before.
I WOULD LOVE TO KNOW YOUR THOUGHTS ABOUT WHAT ROLES ION AND ALIXE PLAY IN THIS AU.

Date: 2011-11-18 08:09 pm (UTC)Yeah, I really feel like they could have done more with the Grid's place in things. Like, it might have been kind of cool to have some Grid-real world communication. They could have even done something crazy like having Dillinger Jr. be their contact, and have him become more of an ally, which could have been neat. BUT I DIGRESS.
OKAY I LOVE THE NAME ION. :D That was actually something I was wondering about--did you have any thoughts as to how the Guardians might manifest themselves as programs? Like, could they have had some aspect of their animals realized? I could almost see Ion having a Hindu god look, with lots of arms to do lots of things with. In that respect I could see him as something like an administrative program or a task manager, something that directs data and manages flow and, despite hanging in the background, keeps things running smoothly. He's probably also a little older in terms of when he was coded, and occasionally freezes when he gets an inappropriate command. XD
You actually got me thinking about how an alchemist might translate into the Grid. The thought that came to mind is that they could corrupt malicious code, which makes me think Alixe might be some sort of antivirus program (ALSO, TOTALLY BEING A DOCTOR AND KEEPING THE SYSTEM HEALTHY. XD). That would probably also make her tougher and more active than her counterpart, although I could see her wanting to quarantine things first, or wanting to make absolutely sure the program she's after is malicious before going in.
