Uh. This was meant to be a short RH update post. But it got Long.
- I've been thinking about the application process a bit. For the reviews, I will be reviewing everything. The first things my reviews will look at is world-consistency - does this character look like someone who would live in this world? The second thing I look for is overdose of Shiny - I am VERY VERY concerned with moderating the levels of Shiny people have, and if people are using Shiny, I need to make sure they have a compelling character and I need to be sure of their activity level and commitment. Then third, of course, would be a review based on the character itself on the nitpicky level.
For apps with larger quantities of Shiny, such as king applications, kirin applications, taika applications and certain hanjyuu applications, I will want to have a second and third opinion, and I want to have a pool of people I can call on for that opinion and expect a fairly quick turnaround. But a majority of the applications will be a quick-n-easy yea or nay. Mostly I'm concerned with the char fitting into the world and not being Mary Sue.
When it comes to determining whether or not the applicant has read the source material, I'm certain that reading the application can tell me that one way or another, and if I'm still unsure I'll have an interview with the applicant just to make sure.
- Good vs bad characters...I was going to push and try to find incentives for people to play bad guys, but I'm thinking it won't be necessary. After all, I'm being a stickler for the stuff having the same feel as canon, and in none of the canon stories is the main character a 'bad' person. They are all decent people who go through discoveries to become even better people. So for everyone's major characters, they should really go for what they feel like will make a good story of discovery and self-enhancement. As one person put it, we are all mature enough writers to be able to work in antagonist minor characters and plot without resorting to forcing someone to play the 'bad guys'.
Of course, if someone did want to play a balls-to-the-wall bad guy, I WOULD HUG THEM AND SQUEEZE THEM. But it does nobody any good to try to force people into roles they don't want to play.
- EVERYONE FEEL FREE TO SPAM THE HELL OUT OF THE CHARACTER SANDBOX. Seriously guys, I plan on having at least one character in each kingdom for the present timespan, and like half a billion characters in the history of the Twelve Kingdoms. Feel free to approach other people and ask to play someone in a court, or an associate or friend or a family member. I asked Ru the other day if I could play her kirin's nyokai (the chimera mommies that kirin have) and now we have a cat-dinosaur-lady hovering around Ryurin. I am willing for takers in Sou's court - the only two people K and I had in mind for Sou plot was the Taifu and Chousai, so that leaves like 10 other positions in the court open for other people.
(Uh I effed up the table on the Sandbox by accident. Anyone know how to fix it?
- I've been struggling with the idea of what is a PC in RH, vs. an NPC, and K suggested the usage of MPC (major player character) vs. mPC (minor player character) instead. The definition of a MPC would be a character that you would like to plot an entire arc around. Like, this is a character that you want to play development into, write multiple long stories about, put them at the crux of a mystery, etc. Kings and kirins are automatically MPC level characters, because they have high quantities of Shiny in them. But everyone else is really up to you whether you think they'll be a major plot character, or just someone who is there to help along other characters in their stories.
Tahorou, Sengyo (male Nyosen), and Jaku (Kou farmer and former Shusei) are the ones I know will be MPCs for me. I am certain that I want to play through multiple development arcs with them, and if I had to write a novel about each, I know I could. I'm unsure about Tochoki, Undetermined En General, and Fuyui - Tochoki is an incredibly strong character to me but I'm not sure where to take a development arc with her, En General is still a nebulous concept, and Fuyui's story is going to end with a chainsaw and some Ranka so I think she'll end up being the antagonist in other people's stories. So for now I can call those three mPCs, and if I decide to upgrade and give one of them a character arc, I can do that.
I think MPCs are the only ones who need to do the whole applications. For mPCs I might ask for a mini-app, or a proposal. mPC approval would really only need my stamp on it.
I need an abbreviation for characters in the historical eras. HPCs? They will have a separate app/proposal sheet that I'll make at a later time.
- The time that I've designated as the 'present' has shifted forward about five years. The crux year of the game is 2010, which is the point were a number of very major changes happen - the two most pressing events being En about to wage war on everyone, and the king of Kyou going missing and his/her kirin assuming the throne. But the 'present' also extends ten years into the past, to 2000, and five years into the future, 2015. This is because I don't want people to feel pressure to work linearly through their character arcs. Everything that takes place before 2000 will be considered 'historical' and backstory, while everything taking place after 2015 is strictly non-canon, and references to such events will not be allowed on the website. You can speculate, but I feel like delving too far into the future of the characters will take away from the immediacy of telling the story of them as they are in the present. Plus, it is hard to admit that one day, your king/kirin character will fuck up and die, and I want to spare people of that a bit.
- The calendar system has been pretty much sorted out. For years, each kingdom still has their own system of counting years based on the era-system of Japan, but there is also a universal year-counting system called Wa-reckoning, which is the Gregorian reckoning of years, and was made pretty much for the ease of the players. For months of the year, we are going with the Pax calendar of 13 months in a year, each month with 28 days, and a leap week added once every six months. Each month is associated with a zodiac animal and with a kingdom, and the thirteenth month is associated with the Cat and the Yellow Sea.
- Tentei is Dr. Claw.
- Also about the mysterious Yorai Era, which would have taken place some 300 years before game start...
Of course, the Yorai era will only happen if the present era of RH seems to be off on a good start :D
ALSO DUDES, IF YOU WANT TO BE ADDED TO THE SANDBOX, PLEASE LEAVE ME A MESSAGE!!!! I want you kicking up lots of dirt there ;_;

Date: 2011-03-26 02:25 pm (UTC)Hmm, characters... I'm almost considering dropping Hanki and working up a Kyouki/Kyourin -- you know, the kirin who's acting as both Taiho and King? That might be more of a fun challenge. I'd move my Perrie expy general to another kingdom then, either keeping him as a provincial general or throwing him into the court as a kingdom-level general (or have him work up to that, ooh, even better!) ^_^
(Speaking of Perrie, what are your proposed rules for hair colour? XD)
EEEEE EXCITE. <3

Date: 2011-03-26 03:53 pm (UTC)FOR HAIR COLOR - the only no-no for hair color for mortals would be blonde, which is exclusive for kirin. Really, ANYTHING ELSE GOES. Having two-toned hair is a lot rarer, but I do allow it. It would be a point of vanity for the character as well.
